this is a video of me and another student walking from A to B but in what ever way we like.
this is done in a stop motion style taking a photo every 10 steps and then pasting the photos together to produce a continue walk through the town.
i find it interesting to see how the walk different ways to the same point how i like to take quiet routes and co along the canal and other people will take the more direct route to the wheel.

Urban earth
Urban Earth is a project set up by Daniel Raven-Ellison and it is about walking across an urban area. the walk is documented in a stop motion style putting together photographs taken every 8th step through out the walk. this project works to show the real life in the urban areas.
The city is usually viewed by the media, historic buildings, tourist information and shopping centres and many don't see the city behind the sense where the urban people life. some places are seen as no go areas by the media and represented as violent and dangerous. the project works to repressing that areas as they are. pushing down the barriers and to show people that these urban areas are not that bad.
working to encourage people to venture out in to their urban areas he has done videos in manchester, bristol.mexico, london and many more.
this work is a lot like me work and is something similar that i want to look it to although i don't want to walk from on side to the other through the urban areas i do want to look at the urban life in areas and personal journeys through areas. i enjoy doing projects that relate to myself and find it easier to relate to my work when i make it more personal.
it is interesting how he mentions on his website that each photo is shot looking straight forward because as people walk though cities the get distracted looking at poeple, cars and thing going on around them, most people don't generally just look straght a head of them selves.
his website is urbanearth.co.uk but that its unavalible at the moments he work also appears on

WalkSpace
www.walkspace.org
this is a new app that you can download on to you iphone (if you were looking enough to own one) and it ables you to find different route. say you walked the same route to work everyday you could look up alternative routes that you had not thought about before taking you different ways and making you appreciate and seen new surroundings. you can also select different types of route say nature route or historic route. this type of technology is really interesting and helpful as if gives people new ways of walking making saw they appreciate all areas of their city.
as i am looking at personal routes it would be interesting to look at the other route that are available to get from A to B and look how look the ways other people take to get to where their going as we all take different route but end up in the same place in the end. a bit like life how we all life our own personal life's but all end up die in the end.

BBC news Even Grant
Artist Even Grant has created a new view on christmas lights instead of the usual fairy lights and christmas theme he has using technology to change the way you see buildings in the city derby. This technology captures the builds and brings them to life creating new depths making the building come alive, bound out of there solid structures and become 3D.
this style of light art is really effective and interesting it changes surroundings that you see everyday and brings them alive giving them a new leach of life and making people appreciate the architecture in their area again.
this idea is really interesting but i think it takes away the aspect of christmas as it is a traditional event and some people like me do not like change also the images shown on the news where did not have a christmas theme to them but more of a abstract feel of shapes and concerts. This works for other event but christmas has a very obverse identity of snow, farther christmas, christmas trees and certain colours as reds, greens and golds.
i am really interesting in changing the way you see building in a different life and how you can change the way people view their city in to a way they have never experience before.
this relates to the event that i attended in 2008 in Piccadilly gardens called Handprint. this was interactive installation by Alabstair Eilbeck. the structure was set up so that a image was projected on to the city tower building. members of the public were asked to scan there hand on a technical scanner on the oppressive side of the garden and then the hand would be projected on to the building. the idea behind this was to take a childhood past time of finger painting and bring it up to date in a technology way. In the same way as the Even Grant it was an idea of make the public look at their building in a different way giving them a image of a new life and making people appreciate the architecture that they see everyday and possibly don't even notice.

so my essay is going fine getting some more reading and writhing done and i should be finished by the dead line.
the practice side is not going to well i just don't feel creative these days and not getting in to my work but i will keep working at it and i will find something i want to do and then jump in to it.
this week i have been drawing out my personal journeys around the cities. these personal journeys are quick drawings of what i view or what i my focus point of the walk. i plan to recreate these drawings in the stop motion room to create quick animation of what i view my city and what is important to me while i walk around the city.i dunno how well that will work buti plan to go in to the animation room tomorrow and start on some animation.

sketchs of the city
these are sketch of the city that have draw while walking down the street and drawing things that catch my eye on the way such as architecture, street furniture and people. the sketches appear to have no control and i really like the lose feeling of them as there not the best cos i'm walking at the same time but its a honest drawing of just drawing freely. click on the images to see them full size.
the top on is drawing on the train from flint to manchester. the second on is a walk home from the footage pub to Rusholme.

hello, i'm wrighting this piece to hopefully sort my ideas out and stop myself from feeling stuck so here goes.
i wanted to something based on shadows in the city, which i'm still keen on experimenting but finding it difficult due to the terrible weather we have in manchester and that there is not sun to cast any shadows so i don't really know where to go from there.
today i have tried out other ideas on looking at the urban landscape such as taking a photo every 10 steps of something that looks interesting this could work out to be good if i took enough photos and found enough interesting subjects within manchester streets.
also i have done a stop motion testers of walking around and taking an image every 4 steps .. i like this idea but it seems to be missing something. it doesn't seem to catch my attention and make me want to develop the idea.
shadows on the other hand does really capture me and i really want to forward this idea but it's just the bloody weather that is stoping me so i need to try and find a way round this as i can't just stop working due to the weather. think think think
so i dunno i'll come back to you
